The heroic Red Watch adventurers have reformed after a brief hiatus. Their name is nearly a decade old in the Gandari Kingdoms, synonymous with legendary feats and daring heroes throughout the various city-states that cover the realm. Led by their fearless commander, the paladin Ulthan, the adventurers decide to embark on a simple escort to reunite a woman and her father—but when that straightforward request reveals a threat to all who call the kingdoms their home, the heroes will unite steadfast friends and unlikely allies to defend all they hold dear. A TIDE OF BONES is a heroic high fantasy adventure novel filled with sweeping action sequences and enthralling suspense.

The premise and promise of adventure with a famous group of mercenaries pulled me in, but unfortunately the book fell flat early on and I put it down after chapter six , even as the main conflict appeared to begin, take my review with that in mind.First, there is a large cast of characters very early on with nothing but their fantasy class to tell them apart. The dwarf is the only one who felt unique because of his dialogue. But the orc and scaleskin talked and acted like normal humans without a trace of what makes them different even though they grew up within their respective races. The sorcerer unoriginally nicknamed everyone which added to the confusion while readers are trying to learn who is who. Overall the characters get along TOO well it made the beginning chapters boring to read.
I praise the author for character backstory, because each clearly had one, the orc's the most compelling, however the moments they shined through didn't fit with the rest of the scene and was more of an info dump.
Other issues: The elf has a sister who tags along just because, and even though they are close to a centrury old each the brother treats his sister like she's a 12 year old human. And the king agrees to go to war based on hearsay? POV switched abruptly also.
The author has some talent with writing, and I urge him to keep at it. The novel just felt like an early draft is all!
I wanted to keep reading, but the story had no inciting incident 20% through the book or compelling conflict or questions to be answered. This is something that can be easily inserted with revisions and beta reader feedback.

A Tide of Bones The Adventures of Red Watch Volume 1 Ben Stovall 9781535208994 Books Reviews
Great read!
This book was the first fantasy book that I have ever finished and I absolutely loved it. I fell in love with the characters, the big bads, the land, the story and the storytelling; Ben is definitely a writer who cares about his characters and he makes you fall in love with them. I hold them all very dearly in my heart and can not wait for the next book to be complete.
On a side note I felt like I was there in the middle of Red Watch. Ben brought me into the story and that is a magical feat for a writer to do.
Awesome book, can't wait for more!
Author does a great job telling his story. The fight scenes are solid and the relationship between the companions is fantastic! Can't wait to see where this young man goes with this series and how his characters will grow and change over time. Great cover art. Recommend reading and giving feedback.
At its heart, this book has a decent story but it's in need of a good editor. Several scenes, especially fight scenes, feel drawn out unnecessarily, to the point that I began skimming to the end of them. The dialogue feels artificial, and the characters need to be fleshed out as individuals. I think there's potential for a good good book here, but it's a revision or two away from that in its current state.
I like to occasionally read something different from my normal mystery books. Thought I would take a chance on this book. I loved it! The storytelling is great as I can visualize the characters - feel what they are feeling - feel the friendship between the Red Watch and definitely feel the battles. I will buy the sequel!!!! Good job Ben Stovall.
The relationships in this book are fantastic, unfortunately the rest of the book feels very very shallow. There isn't much substance to the battles or the decisions of the characters. It's worth the read keeping in mind that this is the first book released by the author.
